Ikarovec
Company overview
Ikarovec is a biotechnology company developing differentiated gene therapy treatments for major ophthalmic diseases. The Company’s lead programs focus on one-time gene therapies for prevalent causes of vision loss that currently have limited or suboptimal treatment options.
Ikarovec’s proprietary platform builds on clinically validated therapeutic mechanisms by adding in a second synergistic component to address key disease drivers that single-pathway therapies are unable to target. Ikarovec’s pipeline targets large and growing markets, including Geographic Atrophy (an advanced form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD and a leading cause of irreversible blindness), wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD), and intermediate AMD.
The Technology
Ikarovec develops next-generation, dual-pathway gene therapies designed to protect retinal cells and preserve long-term visual function. The Company’s lead technology to treat geographic atrophy (GA) targets two critical biological mechanisms:
- Neuroprotection – preventing retinal cell death
- Complement modulation – reducing chronic inflammation that drives disease progression
By addressing both cell degeneration and inflammatory damage, Ikarovec’s approach aims to deliver durable disease modification than current therapies. Preclinical studies demonstrate strong evidence of retinal cell preservation and maintained retinal function.
Expanding beyond AMD, Ikarovec is also a developing gene-agnostic therapy for Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). This approach is designed to benefit many of >95% of RP patients with no therapy options, independent of the underlying genetic mutation, by controlling neuro-inflammation and protecting retinal function.

What next?
Ikarovec is advancing the lead asset to treat geographic atrophy, IKAR-001, with clinical trial initiation anticipated in late 2026. The Company is evolving from a research-focused organization to a clinic-ready biotech, supported by active regulatory engagement, scaled manufacturing, IND-enabling toxicology studies, and planned team expansion.
Dr Andrew Osborne said: “Norwich Research Park has fantastic facilities for emerging and growing companies. Our lab space is competitively priced, and the Park offers access to specialist equipment unaffordable to a start-up. We’re fortunate to have close links with the University of East Anglia (UEA), the Quadram Institute and clinicians at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.”
Dr Emily Warner, Principal Scientist, said: “Our work also allows the sharing of expertise. We’re currently taking part in a student recruitment exercise, whereby we can directly hire University graduates. It’s amazing having all this on our doorstep.”
